Opera, Standards, Open Source

November 12th, 2008 § 0

I arrived last week in Malaysia to find out that there was actually a big open source event over the weekend. Not wanting to miss it, I gate-crashed and presented at the Birds of Feather session.

I talked mainly about web browser industry, touching on CSS3 and HTML5’s new element such as video and canvas. The beauty of video element support is that browsers of tomorrow will be able to play non-proprietary, community-supported video format. The video format should be a open source and open standards, and video played without a plugin. Opera has a build that supports this.

Given that FOSS equates “Free and Open Source”, it is worth to mention that Opera’s recent pet project Opera Dragonfly is BSD licensed. This developer tool, which comes with the browser, allows DOM and CSS editing on the fly.

Thanks to those who supported my first talk back in Malaysia.
